General information on the education system in Slovakia

Universities In Slovakia, there are social, public and private higher education institutions. Also, all higher education institutions are divided into two types: university-type higher education institutions (eg. University. Comenius in Bratislava), non-university-type higher education institutions (mostly specialized).

Currently there are 12 universities, five higher technical schools, three art schools, a School of Economics, two military and police schools, 10 private universities and three foreign university that provides training in Slovakia.

Levels of higher education and academic degrees are different from the system used in the former CIS countries and their understanding can be very difficult for foreigners. Slovak universities provide education through accredited educational programs, and is divided into three degrees.
The first level of education ends in awarding bachelor's degree graduate (Bch. or BcA. - Bakalár), training usually lasts three years, in some high schools for 4 years.

The second level is more difficult. Education usually lasts 2 years, but varies from one to 3 years and there are three different programs.

The first program is assigned an academic master's degree (Magister), which is analogous to the degree Mag. or MgA (Master of Arts), or in the Anglo-Saxon systems MA (Master of Arts), M.Sc. (Master of Sciences) ? M.F.A. (Master of Fine Arts). After passing the so-called rigoroznogo exam assigned rank: RNDr. (Doctor of Natural Sciences - Program in Science and Natural History), PharmDr (Doctor of Pharmacy - a pharmacy program), PhDr. (Doctor of Philosophy - v spolocenskovedných a umenovedných študijných programoch), JUDr. (Doctor of law - the legal programs), PaedDr. (Doctor of Pedagogy - v ucitelských a telovýchovných študijných programoch), ThDr. (Doctor of theology - a theology programs).

The second possible program on the second level of higher education - is an engineer education program, and given academic degree of Engineer (Ing. - Inžinier). Assigned to graduates of technical, agricultural, and, unlike other countries, the economic dimension. In contrast to the master's program, graduates of the program the engineer cannot take rigorozny exam. The analog of the academic degree is a German Dipl.-Ing. (Diplom-Ingenieur) and in technical specialties Anglo-Saxon M. Eng. (Master of Engineering), Master of Science or Master of Applied Science. It is worth noting that the Slovak word inžinier comes from the Latin word ingenius means, as well as in many other continental European countries, mental ability, unlike, for example, the United States, Britain, or the CIS, where the word engineer refers to the word engine (engine, device) and is rarely used in conjunction with education, as relates to the technique.

A third possible program of the second level of higher education - is a doctoral education program in which are assigned to academic degrees MUDr. (Doctor of general practice), MDDr. (Doctor-dentist), or MVDr. (Doctor-veterinarian).

The third and the highest level of higher education in Slovakia - is a doctoral education program, which lasts a maximum of three years full-time and five years in absentia. Assigned to the academic degree of PhD. (Doctor), ArtD. (Doctor of Arts) or Th.D. (Doctor of Theology).

Primary and secondary education

School education begins at 6 years and is compulsory for all children whose parents live on the territory of Slovakia, including foreigners. Children have a constitutional right to education in their native language, which is used most frequently to minorities: Hungarian, Czech, Polish, Roma, Ukrainian and Ruthenium. In Slovakia, there are no schools teaching in Russian, however, there are schools studying Russian language.

A special commission is looking for the potential talents of the child, to enroll him in a special course of study: literature and drama, artistry, etc., or expresses an opinion about the possible postponement of the beginning of the school for one year. In any case, after age six, a child must attend either the first grade, or, in the case of postponement  of the beginning of the school, the last class of kindergarten or a zero - or preparatory class school.

Mandatory public education lasts  in Slovakia  10 years. Primary school consists of nine classes and is divided into 2 levels: first through fourth grade and from fifth to ninth. After that, students enter secondary school, which lasts four years, in some cases five years. Higher education lasts 5 years, of which the first three years - a bachelor degree and two years - master's degree. Therefore students begin higher education at 19-20 and graduate at the age of 24-25 years.

At the end of each academic year the certificates of prescribed form are issued. They reflect the achievements of the child and the objects of study. A child and his parents after graduating from elementary school have to decide whether he would come to college or not, and on that basis choose one of the three existing types of schools: Gymnasium (gymnázium), specialized secondary school (stredná odborná škola), average specialized college (stredné odborné ucilište).

1. Gymnasium. Prepares candidates for higher education.  Education lasts 4 years. There are also special schools with in-depth study, for example, of several foreign languages. Education in school is sometimes extended by one year and lasts five years. There are also eight-year high school, where students come immediately after the fourth grade of elementary school.

2. Average specialized school. Almost - technical schools. Areas of Study: Feasibility, teaching, health, etc. Graduates - prepared junior specialists. Diploma
